Speaking in West Lafayette, Indiana on Wednesday, Barack Obama made the following statement:

Throughout our history, America’s confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world.

The bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor? Is he confusing Pearl Harbor with Hiroshima? This one is right up there with America having fifty seven states!

Blogger Dean Barnett at The Weekly Standard notes the particular irony of this gaffe — Barack Obama was from Hawaii.

This is a surprising error for a Hawaii native (via the great Kansas heartland) to make. Perhaps Obama was merely confused, as he and his surrogates so often accuse John McCain of being.

Over at Hot Air, Ed Morrissey notes:

This gaffe …. speaks to a fundamental superficiality of Obama, a man who seizes tropes and themes with little understanding of their significance or their details.

Macranger adds:

My dad was there and he told me there were a whole LOT of bombs, like all over the place. But who is he to question the Light Being?

And of course RedState cannot let this one go by:

“The bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor,” forsooth. You’d think that he’d have better speechwriters by now.

Watch Barack Obama in Lafayette, IN and note with particular amusement the sign on the podium — “Judgement to Lead.” First he needs a course in American history, something he apparently missed out on in the madrassa.

Baldilocks is keeping track of Obama’s factual mistakes:

Just a few reminders…

57 States

Auschwitz versus Buchenwald

Stalin as WWII Enemy

Hmmmm. A bit uncharitable I think Nancy. In my humble opionion, you are reaching a bit. Opposition to a presidential candidate should be made of sterner stuff than the dropping of an “s” in a several hundred word speech. I admit, it is fun, but be careful that you don’t start to sound like some of the petty ham and eggers that post here from time to time.
Always with best regards, I remain…
